Turkey’s tourism revenue increases 13.2% to USD 8 billion in 2nd quarter of 2019

According to figures provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUİK - Turkstat), Turkey’s tourism revenue grew 13.2% in the second quarter of 2019, with an increase of 15.3% in visitors to 12,762,346. Revenue in the second quarter of 2019 was USD 7,974 million compared with USD 7,045 million in the same period of the previous year. The average expenditure per visitor to Turkey decreased in this quarter from USD 636 in 2018 to USD 625 in 2019.

The recovery in the Turkish tourism industry in terms of number of visitors has been very comforting at a time when the Turkish economy is moving into recession. However, the continuing lower revenue per person is disconcerting, but this may improve as a result of the strengthening of the Turkish lira this Summer.

Of the 12,762,346 visitors to Turkey in the second quarter of 2019, 11,499,211 (90.1%) visitors were foreign and 1,263,135 (9.9%) visitors were Turkish citizens living abroad. The average expenditure per foreign visitor to Turkey was USD 607 compared to USD 766 for Turkish citizens living abroad. The figure for foreign visitors was a 10.7% fall on the figure of USD 678 for the first quarter of 2019.

The number of Turkish citizens visiting abroad in the second quarter of 2019 was 2,444,668, a 11.4% increase compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Their total expenditure abroad was however USD 1,083 million, a surprising fall 34.4% on the figure for the same period of the previous year. Their average per capita expenditure was USD 443, compared with USD 752 for the same quarter of the previous year. The economic recession in Turkey has clearly forced Turkish citizens to make savings on their trips abroad by either choosing cheaper destinations or by making shorter trips.

In 2018, Turkey’s tourism revenue grew by 12.3% to USD 29,513 million, whereas the number of visitors grew by 18.1% to 45,628,673.  The average expenditure per visitor to Turkey fell from USD 681 in 2017 to USD 647 in 2018 . The number of Turkish citizens visiting abroad in 2018 was 8,383,432, a 5.7% decrease compared to the previous year. Their total expenditure abroad was USD 4,896 million, a decrease of 4.7% on the previous year. Their average per capita expenditure was USD 584, compared with USD 578 for the previous year. Of the 45,628,673 visitors leaving Turkey in 2018, 38,951,902 (85.4%) visitors were foreign and 6,676,771 (14.6%) visitors were Turkish citizens living abroad. The average expenditure per foreign visitor to Turkey was USD 617 compared to USD 801 for Turkish citizens living abroad. This compares with USD 630 and USD 903 respectively in 2017.
