Turkey’s foreign trade deficit was USD 92.1 billion in 2025 per preliminary calculations

According to preliminary figures provided by the Trade Ministry based on the General Trade System (GTS), Turkey’s foreign trade deficit for December 2025 was USD 9,416 million, 6.9% higher than the USD 8,811

 million deficit figure for the same month of the previous year, and 18% higher than the USD 7,982 million deficit figure for the previous month of November.

 

Exports were USD 26,411 million in December 2025, 12.8% higher than the figure for the same month of the previous year, and 17.2% higher than the figure for the previous month of November. Imports were USD 35,826 million in December 2025, 11.2% higher than the figure for the same month of the previous year, and 17.4% higher than the figure for the previous month of November.

 

The percentage of imports met by exports was 73.7% in December 2025 compared with 72.7% in the same month of the previous year.

 

For the total year of 2025, the foreign trade deficit is USD 92,090 million, 12% higher than the previous year, with exports recorded as USD 273,434 million (an increase of 4.5%) and imports as USD 365,524 million (an increase of 6.3%). 

 

With regards the total year of 2024, the trade deficit was USD 82,232 million, 22.7% lower than the figure for the previous year. Exports totalled USD 261,778 million and imports totalled USD 344,010 million. The export figure was a 2.4% increase and the import figure a 5% decrease on the figures for the previous year.

 

The automotive sector with USD 3,572 million (13.5% of total exports) led the export table in December 2025, followed by the machinery and equipment sector with USD 2,413 million (9.1% of total exports), the electrical equipment sector with USD 1,828 million (6.9% of total exports), the precious stones & metals sector with USD 1,181 million (4.5% of total exports), and the energy sector with USD 1,159 million (4.4% of total exports). With regards the total year of 2025, the automotive sector with USD 36,742 million (13.4% of total exports) led the export table, followed by the machinery and equipment sector with USD 25,913 million (9.5% of total exports), the electrical equipment sector with USD 17,771 million (6.5% of total exports), the energy sector with USD 15,258 million (5.6% of total exports), and the precious stones & metals sector with USD 13,367 million (4.9% of total exports).

 

The energy sector led the import table in December 2025 with USD 6,188 million (17.3% of total imports), followed by the machinery and mechanical equipment sector with USD 4,258 million (12.6% of total imports), the automotive sector with USD 3,761 million (10.5% of total imports), the electrical equipment sector with USD 2,939 million (8.2% of total imports), and the precious stones & metals sector with USD 2,272 million (6.3% of total imports). With regards the total year of 2025, the energy sector led the import table with USD 62,590 million (17.1% of total imports), followed by the machinery and mechanical equipment sector with USD 41,650 million (11.4% of total imports), the automotive sector with USD 36,869 million (10.1% of total imports), the electrical equipment sector with USD 29,980 million (8.2% of total imports), and the precious stones & metals sector with USD 28,111 million (7.7% of total imports).

 

The top five countries to which Turkey exported in December 2025 are Germany (USD 1,855 million), USA (USD 1,509 million), UK (USD 1,318 million), Italy (USD 1,232 million), and Iraq (USD 1,164 million). With regards the total year of 2025, the top five countries to which Turkey exported are Germany (USD 22,169 million), UK (USD 16,695 million), USA (USD 16,351 million), Italy (USD 13,271 million), and Iraq (USD 12,382 million).

 

The top five countries from which Turkey imported in December 2025 are China (USD 4,155 million), Russia (USD 3,119 million), Germany (USD 2,492 million), Switzerland (USD 2,032 million), and USA (USD 1,489 million). With regards the total year of 2025, the top six countries from which Turkey imported are China (USD 49,576 million), Russia (USD 42,360 million), Germany (USD 30,113 million), USA (USD 18,084 million), Switzerland (USD 15,738 million), and Italy (USD 15,736 million).
