Turkey’s automotive production increases by 28.2% in first five months of 2021

According to figures presented in the Automotive Industrialists’ Association’s (OSD) monthly report for May 2021, total automotive production was 82,860 units in May 2021, 31.2% higher than the figure for the same month of the previous year. Of this total, car production was 66,976 units in May 2021, 54.8% higher than the figure for the same month of the previous year. Commercial vehicle production decreased by 20.1% to 15,884 units.

The continuation of the ongoing economic recession, recent fiscal tightening in Turkey and weak exports have resulted in a poor production performance in May 2021. The increase in production in May 2021 compared with the same month of the previous year was however achieved because of the negative effect of the first wave of the Covid pandemic in April and May of 2020, when many production facilities had been closed down.

Total automotive production in the year 2020 was 1,297,854 units, down 11.2% from the figure of 1,461,244 units for the previous year.

Total car production in the year 2020 was 855,043 units, down 13% from the figure of 982,642 units for the previous year.

Total car production was 982,642 units in 2019, 1,026,481 units in 2018, 1,142,906 units in 2017, 950,888 units in 2016, and 791,027 units in 2015.

2017 was a record year for automotive production in Turkey, but production fell 8.6% in 2018, 5.7% in 2019, and 11.2% in 2020. Automotive production in 2020 has fallen below the figure achieved in 2015.
