Turkey’s automotive production increases by 28.1% in first four months of 2021

According to figures presented in the Automotive Industrialists’ Association’s (OSD) monthly report for April 2021, total automotive production was 105,496 units in April 2021, 845% higher than the figure for the same month of the previous year. Of this total, car production was 76,334 units in April 2021, 690.1% higher than the figure for the same month of the previous year. Commercial vehicle production increased by 1,840.3% to 29,162 units.

Despite the continuation of the ongoing economic recession and recent fiscal tightening in Turkey, Turkey’s automotive production figures continue to show a significant improvement in April 2021. Continued strong domestic sales and improved export figures were the main driving force behind this improvement in production. However, it should be noted that the figures for April 2020 were extremely low due to the closing of production facilities brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, and this should be taken into consideration when analysing April 2021 figures in comparison. 2021 results are still behind those of 2019.

Total automotive production in the year 2020 was 1,297,854 units, down 11.2% from the figure of 1,461,244 units for the previous year.

Total car production was 982,642 units in 2019, 1,026,481 units in 2018, 1,142,906 units in 2017, 950,888 units in 2016, and 791,027 units in 2015.

2017 was a record year for automotive production in Turkey, but production fell 8.6% in 2018, 5.7% in 2019, and 11.2% in 2020. Automotive production in 2020 has fallen below the figure achieved in 2015.
